City of Austin Phone Numbers To Call For Code Compliance Concerns–

Non-emergency type complaints.  Call 311.  If you are having problems with any complaint you called in please contact the Austin 311 Customer Service Manager, Frances Hargrove, at 972-9802. She can research any problem you are having and help resolve those issues.
Building without a permit — 311 is the correct number to call if you see building going on without permits. We do not have an emergency contact call system set up to take complaints where work is occurring at the time of the call.  Complainants can try to send an e-mail, after calling 311, to Work Without Permit Supervisor Wes Buckner at Wesley.Buckner@ci.austin.tx.us.  Response will depend on the time the complaint is sent and inspector availability.

Paving/building to the back lot line.  If a structure is being built up to the back property line, call 311, the complaint will be routed to code compliance.  Paving up to the back property line may or may not be a code violation.  Paving is considered flat work and does not require a permit.  It is also not considered to be a structure, so an individual may pave up to the property line.  The main concern would be if the paving exceeds impervious cover limits.

Paving the front yard (exceeding impervious cover limit).  Call 311, the complaint will be routed to code compliance.

Inadequate parking.  Call 311, the complaint will be routed to code compliance.

Parking on grass/front yard when neighborhood has no yard parking.  Most APD District Reps prefer you call these types of complaints in directly to them.  However, there have been a lot of changes in staffing at APD, because of the budget, so you’ll need to call your APD District Rep to see how they would like you to call in these types of complaints.

Parking blocking view of turning traffic.  If the vehicle is blocking the view of traffic, you should call 911, however, please call your APD District Rep to verify this.  This is an APD issue.

Parking too close/too far to/from curb. This is an APD issue, call 311, and the complaint should be routed to an APD Officer.

Parking blocking sidewalk.  This is an APD issue, call 311, the complaint should be routed to an APD Officer.

Gas leaks.  Call the gas provider for your area or AFD (Austin Fire Department).

Renting out game/loft rooms as bedrooms.  Depends!  If the rooms are large enough to be a bedroom, there is not more than six unrelated individuals living in the dwelling, and there is proper egress in the room, then this would not be a valid complaint.  However, if any of the above conditions are violated, call 311, and the complaint will be routed to code compliance.

Exceeding the occupancy limit.  Call 311, the complaint will be routed to code compliance.

Trash left after garbage pickup.  Call 311, the complaint will be routed to code compliance.

Dumpster improperly placed in right-of-way.  Call Sam West in Public Works Department at 974-8775.

Property with expired permit, no inspection, now occupied.  Call 311, the complaint will be routed to code compliance.
